I don't know if I have already mentioned it, but an extract from Tell Me No Lies by Pilger would be good. The chapter on the Thalidomide Scandal really shows the ethical questions faced by those when they are choosing what to report.

Frontline Related text!!!!

Now the best related text known to man would be HOMER: BAD MAN episode......
........however, my teacher is almost forbidding me from using it.
She says it may be considered as Screenplay, and the same text type as Frontline!!!!!! I guess since both texts use satire as the main technique....

My teacher pretty much advised against any cartoon, as they are satirical, like King Of The Hill, which has also a good ep.

And i cant use The Truman SHow according to her, because it is a Standard Eng text

i guess i understand where she is coming from......take the fact that one is a cartoon, the other is acted out......the shows are pretty much the same!

Can anyone shed some light on the subject?
Do you know anyone who used it previously and never got marked down?
Who is using it? (Homer Bad Man is a killer text and exactly like ADD SE* AND STIR)

i also remember my teacher classifying FRONTLINE as documentary/screenplay
which is why we cant use things like Farenheite 9/11

now my teacher isn't a crack pot, i have total faith in her....i jst wish she didnt break my dream of using simpsons as a related text.....now i have to really know.........Can i use HOMER: BAD MAN as a text?????????????????????

the song "the hurricane" by bob dylan can be used as supplementary material, as can the movies "the hurricane" and "the truman show"

.....it can be considered a tv series and screen play.....

which is the same text type as frontline...

therefore....you can not talk about it

this is just a suggestion, but you may be able to use 'the news' from jack johnson, off his first album brushfire fairytales' (2001), or perhaps 'fall line' from on an on (2003) or even 'bad day' from R.E.M

might that then imply that you study the screenplay as opposed to the actual episodes? and also you would only have to comment on techniques such as language and things concerning 'frontline'? that sounds like a strange sort of idea, considering a screen play and a visual text has really different implications. i feel you're quite justified in questioning that sort of concept

It's probably good to get texts which fit into Journeys as well.

So, Truman show and Da Vinci would be good for that.

Why would it be good to get one that fits into the Journey's module too?
So you can use the same text for both modules?...

For our assessment task we've been specifically asked to look at a documentary...I recommend crime docos. Anything to do with forensics and so on. I'm doing 'The FBI Files' which basically says the FBI always catch their man etc, etc. The ABC and SBS are usually gold for docos, but theirs are usually a little more liberal than the ones shown on ch 7, 9 and 10 (The Schapelle Corby and Douglas Wood ones would probably also be great).

In regards to using a text that is a prescribed one in another module/subject:

My teacher was a head marker for the HSC and he said it was fine.

There's also no rule stating you can't use the same related text for more than one module, although unless you're lucky, the vast majority of texts will tend to really suit either one or the other, and you might be better off studying two different texts that are more appropriate.

Also, a range of genres is preferred :)

This docu was screened on SBS last Thursday but it's also available on dvd and very much recommended as a related text on this topic area:
"Truth, Lies and Intelligence" - basically on the manipulation on the Iraq war by the media and the involvement by Bush, Blair and Howard.
