What is the importance of doing "legal studies" in year 11 and 12, my school doesn't offer it and although I realise it isn't a pre-requisite will I be at any series disadvantage in the future.

Knowing some things about the law is better than knowing none at all, this applies to any subject

But the worst thing anyone can do is think their HSC subjects can save them the real work in 1st year uni and beyond.

im doing it, and think it will assist me to an extent.

Well, you're wrong. The "substantive material" in legal studies covered in two weeks in first year and is of zero benefit.

It's not even of benefit in terms of telling you whether you'll like the law. In my view, it may even be deceptive.

While that holds true for pretty much every subject at uni, your obvious penchant for proving other people wrong doesn't really help anyone here. If that poster enjoys legal studies and does well in it, then it's a good choice.

My only advice would be to try and strike a balance between subjects that you enjoy, subjects you excel at and subjects that scale well. The beauty of law is that you don't have to stress about picking your HSC subjects. They've got you covered on the English front so the rest is up to you.

you do realise that the NSW legal studies syllabus has been changed. i am NOT taking the old one that you did. the newer one is more to the point.

i use the word "introduce" loosely. however it still has relevance.

It might help you in your first 3 lectures, but tbh it's so basic compared to the rest of the content that everyone that isn't completely retarded will pick it up pretty quickly. So yeah, it's not really that advantageous.

EDIT: scoring 100% in HSC legal really isn't something amazing or indicative of real legal skill, it's pretty easy.

legal studies teaches students about the law through various topics. as someone said before, you are better off knowing a bit about law than nothing at all. im not saying people who don't do it are disadvantaged - im saying those who have done legal before may have a better understanding before entering the degree. that's all im saying. if you cant deal with that, it's your problem.

Personally, I think doing legal studies helped prepare me for law. If I hadn't done legal studies I would have been lost, especially in my first few weeks. But that's just me, if you pick up things fast then it probably wouldn't matter for you.
