Hey Economics students, is it actually necessary to buy the 2013 versions of the Riley/Dixon textbooks? How far back is too far back? Is 2012 fine or what?

Thanks. :)

Doesn't your school buy the new ones? And do you guys use Riley or Dixon?

Na apparently they're not buying next yr.

They're buying new prelim textbooks because the current prelim ones are from 2003...

And we use Dixon and Riley - you get a choice I think, but I'm buying both anyway.

So here I am doing my math homework before I go out. The question simply said "Simplify 5y-7y"

My answer: y(5-7)

LOL

Screw French, you should probably work on your English first.
Meh

m8, I think it was your speech that got demolished, not hers.
Ahahaha

Anyway Rivalry I'm jelly of your speaking task.

I love impromptus, really wish my school did them.

I had to do a 10 minute impromptu interview with the school deputy, prefect co-ordinator, leadership co-ordinator, year advisor, and current school captain during the School Captain selection process.

Absolutely beasted it as well.
Nice

Are you going to buy the workbooks as well? Never used them before

What's the topic and thesis you have?

Personal statement
attach a statement about yourself (no longer than one a4
page). as a guide, you might focus on the following:
– academic achievements, eg prizes, competitions, favourite
subjects, clubs
– positions of leadership, eg prefect, captain, youth team
leader, club president
– communication skills, eg debating, writing, participation in
clubs and school activities
– sporting participation and achievements
– other activities such as work experience, study tours,
extracurricular activities, community involvement
– future plans, the type of career you have in mind, and how
your chosen university course will help you achieve this.

So I basically did a paragraph on each because I figured rather than being ridiculously out there, I would let my achievements speak for themselves, but I just don't know how to get a good intro going

Questions to consider in your application (maybe use those to form your intro?):

- What am I good at?
- What do I wish to pursue in the future?
- Why do I wish to go to Usyd?
- What are my academic weaknesses and strengths?
- Will I contribute to the uni?
- How well do you get on with people?

Questions to consider in your application (maybe use those to form your intro?):

- What am I good at? Nothing
- What do I wish to pursue in the future? Dole cheque payments
- Why do I wish to go to Usyd? What are my academic weaknesses and strengths? Usyd is big, I can bench 100kg
- Will I contribute to the uni? ofc not
- How well do you get on with people? what are people?
jks. Thanks for the insights, I guess I just really have to hone down the purpose of the statement by focusing on questions like that rather than just bombing it with things i have done.

Yes it is absolutely necessary in order to get the up-to-date statistics and facts. Things change quickly in economics.

Hmm, fair enough.

But since the statistics itself are the same (name of statistic) in each edition of the textbook, couldn't you research them?

Like Gini Coefficient would be in each of the textbooks.

Yeah defs- I don't really bother with the 'latest' stats in Dixon/Riley because even though they are pretty recent, by the time of HSC, they're already one year out of date. The trends are very important but you can get those from the 2012 textbook. I recommend buying Bulmer- that's really up to date and real world focussed which is good. But yeah for other stats, you can just look them up on the net.

And get stats and examples from beyond the textbook- get stuff from the papers etc

I don't really get how to do this though. And don't really get the point of it.

How are you supposed to use the articles from papers/magazines? Use the stats from them like every other stat?

I'm just confused about that.
