Hmm well.

First and foremost i'm appalled no one has mentioned Clapton's solo from "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on the white album. Not to mention the cool live versions.

.
Dude, I don't know if it's insanely famous or not, but I heard this song done with George Harrison somewhere or the other. Fucking awesome. Only heard it once though :(

I know, != means not equal to.
Oh, sorry. I didn't understand what you mean by !=, I thought it was just an exclamation mark.

Cliffs Of Dover - Eric Johnson
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Freebyrd - Lynyrd Skynyrd
And probably the biggest 'fuck you' to any guitarist Michael Angelo Batio - Speed Kills

I know it's not a guitar solo, but I don't see it likely that there is going to be any threads dedicated to a bass solo: so i thought i'd make mention of Cliff Burton's (late of Metallica) efforts, really noticeable in Anesthesia - Pulling Teeth. Fucking brilliant. As for guitar solos I think most of the greats have been mentioned, Hendrix, Paige, Hammet etc. Agreed with whoever said the thing about the emotion, despite it's simplicity the guitar solo in Smells Like Teen Spirit really works perfectly.

I particularly like the solo in Sweet child Of Mine by Guns'n'Roses and November Rain by them too.
