That's cause in Australia League, Rugby and AFL are also reffered to as football. SBS is exceptional as they are football crazy.

The solution to this is to simply adopt the following convention:
Thugby league = Northern Hand-egg
ALF = Southern Hand-egg
Association football = Football

Though what about teams like Melbourne Storm and Sydney Swans. They break game-naming conventions.

No ive always called it soccer and always will call it soccer. Everyone else also used to call it soccer before Australia made the World Cup in 2006, then after that everyone started getting more interested in soccer when before only the really devoted fans watched or cared about the Socceroos.

no one in australia calls it 'football' only the ones here who know/love/play the game say football but when we talk to someone we don't then it's soccer.
and yeah SBS is pretty much the ones who say football.. Les Murray is wog anyways so of course he'd say it.

VIC/SA/WA = AFL
USA = NFL
UK = Soccer
And because soccer has been introduced and not gained popularity for this long it will forever be named as soccer.
