Re: Is there any use bringing a laptop to uni?

There'd also be powerpoints around in say - the library - to keep it on wall power, right?
Yes, any decent campus will have powerpoints at various spots. In newer lecture theatres you may even find powerpoints underneath the seats.

Yeah I was wondering whether to bring mine. I'd rather type out my notes because I'm faster at it than writing. Do many people use laptops for notemaking in lectures?
Yes, in many of my classes I'd say half the class was typing. Exception would be maths, if only because almost everyone is faster at writing maths than typing it.

I only bring my laptop to type notes if its a big lecture. If its only a small lecture, then I just handwrite my notes.

Cause if you think about it, you need to learn to write faster when it comes to an exam, cause you won't be able to use your laptops. ;)

mm, well, last year people started to bring laptops to school to start typing their notes (and I know it's filtered heavily down into the junior years because they all have laptops in class now). Personally I thought it was a bit disrespectful to the teacher, it sort of creates a barrier between teacher/student. Idk, I took issue to it. So I stuck to handwriting.

I'd technically prefer to handwrite because ... well, I don't really like the dehumanising direction that our society is heading in haha and I think it's really horrible that the written word is being replaced by machinery D:
/is idealistic..

Typing is just... so much more... convenient...

I guess I'll judge when I get in there, see what other people are doing.

It's great having a medically certified handwriting condition. :p

I guess it's a different situation in large lectures, where you can have several hundred students. The barrier already exists just due to the size of the class.

Re: Is there any use bringing a laptop to uni?

If it's just regular classes, I tend not to taking. However, if there is a chance I will need to work on something else for my course, I'll take it.

Yeah, I figured, that's probably why I'll start to type.

Re: Is there any use bringing a laptop to uni?

Beware if you are going to try to use uni computers im the libraries- the queues can be long!

I always used my laptop to take notes for law because it more important to try to get down everything they were saying and then I'd later try to understand it. I found this also useful because law lecturers tend not to record their lectures, and some don't put their PowerPoint/projector slides online (yes there are still lecturers that use the old overhead projectors instead of power point!) I'd say 3/4 law use their laptops in class. (this is at USYD anyway).

On the other hand, I handwrote for my arts subjects- mainly because it is less important to get down all they are saying- more just understandin themes etc (I did history). They are also more likely to record lectures. Also, hardly anyboyldy in my arts subjects used laptops. Huge difference between arts and law, at USYD anyway.

The one thing I find most convenient with a laptop - less to carry and instant ultra-organized filing cabinet. Makes notes FAR easier to find and read over.

But ALWAYS have a book and pen ready just incase; computers are unpredictable at times, and you may need to take down a diagram etc.

Yes. I have a habit of trying to get as much of what the lecture says down, and using a laptop makes everything ALOT easier.

Re: Is there any use bringing a laptop to uni?

Definitely. You can use it to take notes (if you prefer that to writing, which I do) and you'll need access to online resources to do assignments and things like that - whilst of course you could use uni computers to do that, having your own machine can be useful. I almost always have my laptop with me, I find it indispensable.
+1. I became attached to a laptop during my final year of school and I'm not about to give up that practice. I just have to remember to continually maintain my good handwriting.

How practical is it to bring a 17.3" laptop to uni? It weights like 4kg. :p

If you're not walking much, perfectly fine. If you have to travel heaps, forget about it.

Re: Is there any use bringing a laptop to uni?

My little Asus Eepc lives in my uni bag. Although there are quite a few days that I take it without using it, it is tiny and of no noticeable inconvenience (other than paranoia about your bag getting stolen). For many of my subjects it has been essential in lectures where there is a lot of content to cover (e.g. core law subjects) or if the lecturer is particularly engaging. In some tutorials it works, in others they don't.

That said, I would recommend against it in many finance/accounting/econometrics subjects as formulas and what not are difficult.

So if you travel more than 2 hours a day one way?
Walking travel. If you can transport it, it doesn't matter.

Also, you should probably move closer.

How many guys are there on BoS and none of them made a reference to porn in this thread? I'm disappointed. I'm revoking a man card each from all of you. Good day.

"Is there any use bringing a laptop to uni?"

Not exactly the type of thread one talks about porn in...

-----

However, in a thread about bogans and Wollongong which is currently active, I posted an image of a pornstar and it was discussed about briefly.

Laptop>Internet>Porn. My logic is simple and not out of place in this thread.
