JULIA Gillard says she is aware of public concerns over the mandatory internet filter interfering with ''legitimate use'' but has vowed to push ahead with the controversial proposal.

In her first comments on the filter since assuming the Labor leadership, Ms Gillard told ABC radio in Darwin yesterday that the proposal was an effort to control the ''dark side'' of communications technology.

''Images of child abuse, child pornography - they are not legal in our cinemas,'' the Prime Minister said.

''Why should you be able to see them on the internet? I think that's the kind of moral, ethical question at the heart of this.'

I haven't quite got my head around how to make this work... I guess sometimes the illegal download in the case of child pornography is made direct to the producer himself, but surely then at the very least people should be allowed to freely trade child pornography acquired without financial transaction to the producer between each other?

Toeing party lines is only a temporary lifesaver for labor/liberal leaders. Ultimately they can get away with bloody murder whilst they dominate in the polls but afterwards the party looks to replace them and so they start doing stuff to placate them. Ultimately though the party will rarely be willing to walk off a cliff so this placation only makes matters worse as it makes the leader look like a puppet. Gillard (like Turnbull) should bugger the party because if she doesn't she's fucked anyway. The downfall of Rudd happened when? After Arbib and Swan lobbied him to get rid of the ETS.

You can't solely blame the internet filter on the Australian Christian Lobby. They have power, but not that much. If they did have that much power then a lot more policies wanted by Christians would most likely be passed. Yeah, your probably right the PM has no bearings on party politics, which is why we should vote out this socialist Labor Government before their policies become anymore Communistic.
