grammar by miles. if you're thinking about actually be a more human human being (no offence but i know quite a few ruse people who lack social skills and honestly, i find grammar guys far more interesting and intellectual than ruse guys.

if fees aren't an issue, (if he doesn't have a scholarship), still go to grammar

Grammar has better facilities and from what I heard, better teaching.

Also a wider variety of students. He will also be academically stimulated because the smart grammar kids are really really smart (ruse level or above)

They have a kickass debating curricular and a wider variety of curricular as well.
THIS would rep you mirakon but can't because i already did before :D

Scholarship, then Grammar. No scholarship, but if you can afford it, then still Grammar. If you can't, then Ruse.

Grammar offers a wide variety of co-curricular activities (http://www.sydgram.nsw.edu.au/co-curricular/), and while Ruse offers its fair share, for co-curricular, Grammar is unparalleled.

Ruse, by nature also has a strong maths-science student base, and if your brother is not really into maths-science, but rather history-english-social science, then go for Grammar. Since Ruse is a public school, it WILL have its fair share of crap teachers and facilities.

At Grammar he still WILL have peers with similar academic abilities and interests (Grammar is still fluctuating around TOP 10 in HSC rankings, so if he is a brilliant student, he can still excel.)

Grammar also offers a wider curriculum (http://www.sydgram.nsw.edu.au/GeneralInformation/academic/curriculum/) than Ruse, especially in the areas of Classical languages and social sciences (e.g Ruse doesn't offer Latin, Classical Greek, Business Studies, Legal Studies) and Ruse also has compulsory agriculture from Yrs 7-10. If your brother does want to socialise with girls, he can do that outside school anyways.

Grammar too has a relatively academic environment, as evidenced by their HSC results.

So don't take this as a Grammar-fanboy argument, but it's just my honest opinion. Good luck with your choices :)

How does the 'non-selected' students in grammar work? :S
I heard that there is an 'ungraded' class

there are A, B, and C classes in each subject and then around 5 ungraded classes - though theres no differentiation between selected and nonselected - if you do well in the exams you'll be in a graded classes the following year

This is the voice of a year 10 Sydney grammar student so I think it could be relevant for you. Now, obviously Grammar is secular in nature and non-denominational. Most of the people in my grade came from the primary campuses in Edgecliff and St Ives. Bear in mind that they all got interviewed before getting accepted into Grammar. For a few people like me, we enrol and do a test along with an interview to get admitted in. Thus, it's relevant to say that everybody at grammar has some intellectual level. T

The teachers in my opinion, have helped me A LOT. When I say that, they helped me extend in music and science by offering things outside the curriculum which I am led to believe wouldn't have been offered in a public school (although I could be wrong). The staff have helped me enjoy learning and the welfare system in the school helps a lot communication and socialisation wise. Facilities in the school are better then you would think. We quite recently constructed a new hall underground which fits the whole of the school. The engineering and landscaping of the hall is actually quite astounding in my opinion. Sport and extra curricular is diverse in a sense that you have many things to choose from. Debating is a highlight at our school along with chess and fencing. We have tonnes of clubs such as philosophy (enjoy it very much), film and robotics plus heaps more.

Ultimately, YOU have to let the person decide whether they rather go to Ruse or Sydney Grammar. My views are a bit biased but I would recommend going to Grammar because it is an experience you'll never forget. I thoroughly enjoy my time currently at the school. Participation is key in getting the most out of Grammar. However, I'm not saying it is in any way better then Ruse. Money and travel are huge factors to consider.

Think to yourself, are you willing to pay approximately $27000 a year at a private school? Are you willing to travel to the city and pay extra expenses. If you have a scholarship (rare chances), then I would definitely tell you not to give up that scholarship for ruse. You have to assess how much you're willing to pay. If it's zero, then please go to James Ruse. Also, if you're just thinking of getting a 99.95 hsc atar in year 12, please don't go to Grammar and waste your money. I know a lot of people that do hsc purely to get marks and advance in their career. Grammar doesn't accommodate for that sort of response.

If your brother likes co-curricular then I would say grammar
Grammer is more all-rounded where as ruse is more on the academic side.
I have friends who go to grammar who do music and debating (similar to your brother) and really enjoy it because of the friendliness of all the people.
As previous people have said, even if he does care a lot about his academic results, grammar would still be good because they still do very well in the hsc.

+1000000000 the thing i hear from past grammar students is that even though they didn't get super duper hsc marks (i.e still over 99 LOL), they are the ones who succeed most in life, however cliched that may sound and so ultimately, grammar wins

This point isn't in your criteria list, but is your family/brother religious? (Christian)

If not, he better be prepared to be swamped by the Bible belting culture at Ruse.

Of course there are bible belters in every school - Grammar included. But given that Ruse is located in Sydney's bible belt (and most students live in that area), be warned that the Christian movement is quite strong at Ruse.

I have had ex-ruse teachers come to my school and teachers from my school goto ruse..

I really would not send my child there based on teachers that have come from there and gone to there.

I have heard nothing but good things about Grammar in the fields I am interested in, the mathematics and sciences and as fare as I am aware Grammar are not HSC Results focussed -- I mean High ATAR does not mean success in life. I think they are one of the schools that try and make students prepare for life, rather than the HSC.

Being an impartial Sydney Boys graduate, I can say that Grammar shits on Ruse if you're motivated to make the most of it. Obviously Ruse has the harder working average student which fosters a more competitive environment, but imho the students in the top 10 at Grammar are the best in the state. In addition, the type of students which Grammar churns out not only get high ATARs but are also very rounded.

It purely depends on what your brother wants. As far as I know, Ruse generally does good in debating as well as chess and I've played a match against Grammar on Board 1 and won but my whole team lost. Ruse is also pretty good at sport - people stereotype about them all being like basement Asians but it really isn't.

Personally, I've heard that teachers at Ruse are good for Maths but some in Science aren't that great.

Grammar scholarships are difficult to get into, whilst Ruse is somewhat easier to get into based on the concept of a "full scholarship" from Sydney Grammar. As a result, most of the students in Sydney Grammar come from a family who are rather wealthy, and yes, they do an entrance examination and interview before being accepted.

Based on academia, James Ruse comes first every year, for the past sixteen years, but that's due to selective examinations, but its also true that Sydney Grammar selects who they want into their school. This debate is sort of like comparing a public school to a private school - whose facilities are better? whose teachers are better? It's obvious its Sydney Grammar, but remember, not everyone is wealthy enough to pay for the school, so James Ruse is for that.

And as for how successful people are in life, you cannot generalise James Ruse students and Sydney Grammar students. The success of one person in later life is purely dependent on the individual, not the institution which they went to, though, it can largely influence ones choice.
