This thread doesn't really apply to me as I'm applying for 2010 (although I'm considering deferring), but after reading through I think I can help a few of you out with info, for UNSW at least.

Ok for local entry (city kids basically) you pretty much need a 98 or 99 atar (99 to be competitive), in 2008 they let in 5 people with atars of 96-97 (obvs their umat + interview scores were extremely high), btw you need a pretty high umat to be competitive too, look on their site for approx. umat scores needed for interview based off atar.

If you are fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to live in a rural area (RRMA 3-7, look it up on UNSW site if you think it might apply), you can apply under the rural students entry scheme. It doesn't give you extra points or anything, but what happens is that they set aside 25% of places (so 52 at UNSW) just for rural people, and you compete against other rural people for these spots. As it happens, the standard of the top 52 people is lower then the standard of the top 150 local people, so it is easier to get in; in 2008 the average uai was 96.25, and I'm sure the average umat is lower too. Your rural rating also comes into play, so it is ranked based = parts on atar, umat, interview and rural rating. I got offered a first round rural interview with a predicted uai of 92 and a umat score that was good for rural, but average for local, so I think my actual result of 97.15 should suffice, especially as I had a friend get a 2nd round offer with a lower atar and umat than me.

With regards to bonded places and stuff, the bottom 25% of the rural people get offered bonded places, and 25% of the local people do too, based on a ranked list of combined scores.
i thought it was 156 total

52x4 = 208

It is 208 total, 156 local students and 52 rural students, then like 70 intl's or something paying in excess of 200K a year.

A lot of people seem to be applying to go into Medicine in my cohort :)

Dunno if that's good or not, but it won't affect me.

Anyone know the approximate UMAT score required to compete for a position in MBBS, and, how much this differs when applying at UWS?

I got a UMAT score of 56 (80th percentile - which is really really shit), but my ATAR estimate was 99.9 (or 99.8, don't remember), and I got a UNSW Med interview.

But I didn't get one at UWS. So I'm guessing (no guarantees, Wooz would have a better idea) that UWS only accept people based upon their UMAT, so long as their ATAR estimates (and/or eventual ATAR) is over their 95 ATAR threshold (93 for GWS applicants).

Oh man its going to be a mission and a half trying to get into medicine. But i am really determined to get into USyd or UNCLE med. Actually, i'll be grateful if any uni accepts me straight into med. Don't worry i'll find a path to get into med even if it takes me 5+ years :p

Also, can anyone tell me what the interviews are like (e.g. type of questions, the level of formality)? As well as the process and difficulty of transferring into med, after 1+ years in uni?

thanks

To get into USyd med, you pretty much need 99.95. It's very difficult. :p

The types of questions are quite simple. They ask about your life as a child growing up, first memories, teachers, they ask about your school, friends, family, any extracurriculars you have. Then there's the "Why do you want to do medicine?".

Level of formality is quite low. You do not need to wear a suit to the interview, but most people do anyway. The interviewers make you feel very much at home.

NB: This is just based on my experience from the UNSW interview.

haha thanks Aerath that helped alot, i thought the interviews would be quite formal and the board being relatively critical haha. So pretty much the interview is just trying to look at your life and personality, and if you are doing medicine for the correct reasons?

Yeh i know Usyd med would be crazy to get into but it seems just right for me, its a prestigious university, campus looks wonderful and the sporting culture. USyd rugby wooo!

But at the moment just trying to get into any uni with med and then maybe transfer to USyd med, if i still believe its the right choice for me. Can anyone give me an indication on how difficult it is to transfer into med from say medsci or science?

I'm really torn between to do Medicine or not to do Medicine. I want a good paying job but I don't know if Medicine is the right thing for me.

pfft..i would say more than half of med students have pay as their most influencing factor..

I understand that almost everyone else would also have pay as a significant factor but if surgeons earnt the same as teachers, then we would see an entirely different story.

Could you honestly say that you would be happy to become a medical practioner on a $60 000 salary? Now you'll probably give me some cliche resonse like "Oh, I want to save lives". The years of training one does to become a surgeon is indeed arduous and those who do choose that route definitely deserve an income that warrants their whatever~ (don't know which word to put in there) lol

edit: now im gonig to get flamed by people saying that im jealous or something along the lines of that -.-

a dedicated teacher who actually teaches well and all that blah blah..
properly plans a lesson etc..

all im saying is there are some teachers who work equally stressful lives than surgeons.. that is on the work side..not the "oh, i'm on a crap salary..how am i gonig to pay the mortgage?" type of stress

as a generalisation..would it be fair to say that 90% of all asians enrolled in med do it because they are salary driven?

lol..most asians want to be doctors dont they (generalisation yeah whatever)

when i get i asked what i want to do in uni or whatever..i respond
then i ask them..and if they're asian, i alwas anticipate surgeon

me: "what about you?"
asian: "surgeon"
me: "specialising in?"
asian: "well..i want to be either a cardiac or neuro"
